    FROM THE FLANNER & BUCHANAN CORPORATE COLLECTION

    Attributed to HENRY PEMBER SMITH (American, 1854-1907)

    PROVENANCE:
    Kenneth Lux Gallery, New York (label verso).

    Henry Pember Smith moved to New York City from Waterford, Connecticut, in 1877 and set up a studio as a landscape and marine painter. Smith exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, although he never became a member, as well as at the American Watercolor Society and the Artists' Fund. An inveterate traveler, Smith painted numerous sites in New England, Spain, Italy, England, New York State, and France. Among his most celebrated works are his Venetian scenes, notably views which focus on architectural motifs reflected in the canals. Working primarily in oils and watercolors, Smith used a tighter technique than the emerging impressionists of his time, giving credence to the belief among historians of American painting that he was largely self-taught.
