NOTE:
Terry Allen is a celebrated visual artist and songwriter who was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and was great friend of Ted Pillsbury's. The two men relished each other's company and were intense conversationalists. Houston gallerist Betty Moody explained in a recent interview: "Around the time Terry Allen had completed a major commission for the Houston airport, which he called Countree Music, we mounted a show of his preparatory drawings for the project in our gallery. Before the show opened, one of my colleagues mentioned, "You know, wouldn't it be great of these could all stay together, they're so wonderful. Well, in walks Ted. He looks at them, walking back and forth, and just loved them. You know that the idea was that Houston is the center of the world, and some of them say "Houstonize the World." Ted bought the whole show. Well that really made an impression! How many times does that happen?"

Countree Music is a multi-media artwork consisting of four primary elements: a bronze tree, a terrazzo map of the world, an original sound system and enhanced lighting. The bronze oak tree was the species chosen because of its prevalence in the Houston area. The terrazzo map designed by the artist, shows an altered configuration of the continents of the world. Music indigenous to a specific continent is audible when standing on or near that spot on the map.
