PROVENANCE:
Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, January 2002

NOTE:
Painter Bob Knox was born in New York City and received a BA in studio art from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut in 1975. He also studied at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, Rennes, France, and SUNY Purchase. In the early years of his career, he worked as an illustrator and his paintings were featured on the cover of The New Yorker magazine numerous times. He currently lives and works in Litchfield, Connecticut.

Characterizing his work as "non-fiction painting," Knox has described his interest in the dialogue between painting and photography, positioning himself as the mediator by transcribing photographic images onto large-scale canvases. His images may appear abstract, but they draw narrative power from a sense of reality. His skillful use of geometry references art history across the centuries, from Vermeer to Mondrian [the latter present in the title of this work], but his approach to his subject matter is most closely related to British Pop Art. Rather than follow one particular style or direction, the artist evokes what he feels is the essence of American art.
