Description

FREDERICK JARVIS (American, 1868-1944)
Untitled
Oil on canvas
30 x 40 inches (76.2 x 101.6 cm)
Signed lower left: W. Frederick Jarvis

Around 1920, Frederick W. Jarvis moved to San Antonio from New York, where he had previously attended the Art Student League. By 1934, he was teaching in Dallas. Jarvis is known to have made several sketching trips to New Mexico and the Grand Canyon before 1928. He is best known for beautiful, romanticized landscapes of the American West. These three paintings are excellent examples of his work and show the influence of luminist painters like Frederick Church and Thomas Moran.
