Frank Beresford studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he was awarded a travel scholarship to Asia. He set out from London on the 'Kanagawa Maru' bound for Japan in 1908 and while much of his journey was plagued by bad weather, in the present picture the artist has depicted clear skies and smooth sailing as the ship passed through the Strait of Gibraltar.
