    Oil on canvas

Signed and dated lower left: F.C. Penfold 1882

Landscape, genre, marine painter and portraitist Frank Crawford Penfold came from a family of artists from Buffalo, New York who painted, designed and engraved jewelry, and worked in fresco decoration. After training initially with his father in Buffalo, and enjoying moderate success painting portraits and landscapes there, he traveled to France in 1877 to further his studies at the Academie Julian in Paris and in Finistere, Brittany. It was Brittany which fully captivated him as a place to live and paint, and he settled in Pont-Aven where he also taught at its artist colony. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salons, and his work found favor on both sides of the Atlantic which enabled him to maintain homes in both Pont-Aven and Buffalo. He remained an influential figure in the Buffalo art scene and also helped organize the Municipal Art League in Chicago, IL in 1901. Penfold's landscapes and portraits often have a wistful mood-something he plainly acknowledged: "Many of my friends at home wonder why I paint what they choose to call "sad" subjects, instead of something brighter and more cheerful. I can only say that I prefer to study pathetic sentiment because I know of no other mood which affords so fine an opportunity to depict character."
