A French painter known for his elegant and highly romantic still lifes, Eugène Bidau was born at La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region of western France. Following his training with Baptiste-Joseph Lechat and the portrait and genre artist Léon-Désiré Alexandre (1817-86), Bidau made his debut in 1863 at the Salon, where he continued to exhibit for many years. As his artistic reputation grew, the painter received numerous awards, especially in the provinces: in Montpellier (1868), Amiens (1870), Angers (1877) where he earned a second-class medal, Nice (1890), and again in Angers (1895) where he was awarded a gold medal. Also known for his talent as a decorator, Eugène Bidau participated in the sumptuous appointment of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. In 1897, he produced three decorative panels for the Palais de Justice in Rennes, which were subsequently translated into tapestries by the Gobelins Factory for the Exposition Universelle of 1900.
