Esther Webb Houseman was a pioneering Texas artist and co-founder of both the Dallas School of Creative Arts and the Craft Guild of Dallas. A graduate of the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Woman's University), she met her lifelong collaborator Velma Davis Dozier there, and together they opened the Dallas School of Creative Arts in 1933, quickly earning recognition for their innovative work in metalcraft and design. Nicknamed "The Lady Blacksmiths," they won first prize in metalwork at the 1935 Dallas Decorative Arts Exhibition and were active in the Dallas art scene during the 1930s. Esther married John Houseman in 1939, in the first wedding at the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods. The "Lady Blacksmiths" eventually closed their school due to wartime metal shortages but reopened it as the Craft Guild of Dallas, which continues to operate today.
