E. Wood Perry was born in Boston and educated at art academies in Germany and France, traveling and studying also in Venice. Returning to the United States, he worked with Albert Bierstadt in California and focused on creating paintings with distinctly American themes. Living in New Orleans during the early years of the Civil Wars, Perry painted portraits of famous figures such as Jefferson Davis. An internationally known portraitist and landscape painter and member of the National Academy, Perry is perhaps best known for his intimate genre scenes, of which Morning Prayer is a superb example.
