    EDWARD HOPPER (American 1882-1967)
    Female Nude Study, 1901
    Pencil on paper
    12in.x 8in.
Signed with initials lower right and signed on reverse
This early study shows an important stage in Hopper's career. This figure drawing shows his strong academic background in draftsmanship that formed the foundation for Hopper's later modern style. Learning from accomplished teachers such as William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, Hopper's figure has volume and substance while occupying a roughly sketched background much as the figures in his mature work exist in a vast empty space. Female nudes played a prominent role in Hopper's later work in his 1921 etching Evening Wind
