Lawn Tennis, St. Ives was likely painted during the course of Potthast's stay abroad in the late 1880s and early 1890s. Potthast is known to have traveled extensively in Europe at this time. As in many of Potthast's works, faces are featureless or concealed from the viewers gaze. The artist commonly created small outdoor sketches of this type, and then worked them up into larger paintings in his studio.
