THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST
Born in Canfield, Illinois, Edward Ertz had a versatile artistic career on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a fine landscapist in watercolor, a wood engraver, illustrator, and teacher in America, France and England. As a young man, he studied in Paris with Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant, and Paul Delance, then returned to Chicago for a five-year engraving apprenticeship. About 1881, he established a lithography business in New Orleans that was active in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Among his commissions were mastheads for newspapers and lithographic views for the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. From 1893 to 1897, Ertz was Professor of Watercolor at the Delecluse Academy in Paris, and later taught art in King's Langley, Hertfordshire, England. He spent much of his later career in London where he was a member of the Royal Society and contributed illustrations to many publications including the London Art Chronicle. The present work of 1895 dates from Ertz's tenure at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. The ethereal atmospheric effects he was able to achieve in this ambitious oil strongly evoke his refined skills as a watercolorist.
