Ed Mell is known for the fractured planes of his brightly colored landscapes depicting the American southwest. Mell's work pays homage to the cubist movement of the early twentieth century while crafting a style that is uniquely his own. In his painting Hollyhocks, Mell has maintained the integrity of the flowers while fragmenting them into their most basic elements. The curvilinear lines of the organic flowers have been straightened out, resulting in a powerful rendering that lends the blossoms strength and vibrancy.
