Chief Shoppenagon, commissioned in 1907 by Michigan lumber titan Charles Willis Ward, exemplifies Couse's innate ability to encapsulate the beauty, dignity, and quiet power of David Shoppenagon, chief of the Chippewa tribe. Couse completed the present study in 1909, and the final work, in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1910.
