Description
DEAN CORNWELL (American, 1892-1960)Romantic Couple Seated by Piano, Hearst's International magazine illustration, March 1922
Oil on canvas
34 x 36 in.
Initialed lower left
This evocative piece appeared as an illustration in F. Britten Austin's story, One Night in Venice.
Caption: "And when you have gone and are a Prince once more, it will be just as a man that I think of you in my solitude."
This piece was also reproduced on page 85 of Dean Cornwell, Dean of Illustrators by Patricia Broder, Balance House, 1978.
One of Martignette's favorite Golden Age illustrators was Dean Cornwell, and looking at this illustration, with its pale central figures, clothed in broad patches of deep color, makes it easy to see why Martignette's discriminating eye for art fixated with such passion on Cornwell. While known for his images of pirates and desperados, this painting clearly illustrates that Cornwell was comfortable in any era, with any subject.
From the Estate of Charles Martignette.
