Description
DAWSON DAWSON-WATSON (British/American, 1864-1939)Quiet Winter Afternoon, 1928
Oil on canvas
22 x 28 inches (55.9 x 71.1 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Dawson Watson / 28
In 1864, Dawson Dawson-Watson was born in London, England. Before coming to this country in 1893, he had already exhibited at illustrious institutions, like the Royal Academy, London. In 1915, he began splitting his time between San Antonio, TX and Saint Louis, MO. He settled permanently in San Antonio in 1926 and became well-known for his impressionistic landscapes, especially those containing cacti. Dawson-Watson showed at most of the exhibitions of importance in the United States and he is represented in many museums, libraries, and private collections, both here and abroad.
Quiet Winter Afternoon is a superb example of early Texas Impressionism, but it also shows the influence of Tonalism, a style that uses an overall color to create a hazy effect. This gives the painting a dreamy mood reminiscent of the works of Tonalist painters, like George Inness and James McNeil Whistler. Snow scenes are relatively rare in Texas art, making this painting all the more desirable to many collectors.
