Dawson Dawson-Watson, an English-born artist with a distinguished career on both sides of the Atlantic, is celebrated for his contributions to landscape painting in Texas and the American West. Born in London in 1864, he trained in Paris under prominent artists such as Carolus Duran and spent formative years in Giverny near the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. His early career took him across Europe and the United States, including stints as director of the Hartford Art Society and teaching at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. Dawson-Watson first arrived in Texas in 1917, and by 1926 he settled permanently in San Antonio, drawn by the region's unique landscapes and the promise of artistic opportunities. He became an influential figure in Texas art, especially known for his vibrant impressionist interpretations of local flora and landscapes.
