This is a fine northern style Dan mask whose circular eyes identify it as male. It represents a male forest spirit (Gle). Without the details of its costume and accompanying masquerade, it is impossible to identify it precisely or identify its exact function. It is only possible to note that an invisible Gle spirit, through dreams, sometimes directs a men's Poro society member to create a specific masquerade and have a mask carved for it, thus making the Gle spirit visible and allowing it to participate in village life.
