Description
CLEMENTINE HUNTER (1886-1988)Washday
Oil on canvasboard
18in. x 24in.
Signed lower right
A "classic" wash day scene. Shelby R. Gilly, author of the book Painting by Heart -- The Life and Art of Clementine Hunter, Louisiana Folk Artist, published by St. Emma Press in 2000, and Clementine Hunter's dealer, says the following about this painting:
"This original Clementine Hunter painting depicts an old Southern washday. Three women appear across the painting, each wearing aprons as they perform their washing duties. The woman on the left is dressed in red with a white hat, and she is using a washboard. An older woman stands in the center dressed in black and white with a black hat. She is stirring the boiling water in a large black pot full of clothes. The other woman is on the far right and is dressed in green with a white hat, and she is reaching her hands into a tub of laundry. The painting shows two poles, one on either side, with a clothesline strung between them. The left side of the line holds white sheets, and the right side holds red and blue clothes. Washday is cast against a background of yellow. The signature is in the lower-right portion of the piece, and is indicative of the painting's originality and date."
Accompanying the painting are three photographs showing Clementine Hunter in her home with the painting, a signed copy of the book Painting by Heart -- The Life and Art of Clementine Hunter, Louisiana Folk Artist, by Shelby R. Gilley, and an appraisal of the painting by Shelby R. Gilley.
