This piece is an original promotional illustration done for MGM studios upon the release of their 1958 movie Run Silent, Run Deep, starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The painting spotlights Lancaster in his role as submarine Lt. Jim Bledsoe. This Robert Wise war classic was an adaptation of Commander Edward L. Beach, USN's novel, published in 1955. In his acknowledgements at the start of the book, Beach thanks Charles Langello, "for his help on weekends and late at night."

Clark Hulings' illustration career was firmly established when he did this painting for MGM studios. It is the only known movie-related painting that he is has done. There has been a dramatic rise in sales prices for Clark Hulings paintings, with some of his landscape paintings reaching the $200,000 mark last year. Hulings' pieces are highly sought after by collectors, museums, and corporations. This offering is a splendid opportunity to acquire a significant painting by Hulings, who has established himself as one of the most highly regarded American realists of the last century.

"Gable and Lancaster make the seas boil in the battle adventure that hits like a torpedo!"
