The Edgar B. Davis Wildflower Competition was one of the most significant events in Texas during the early part of the twentieth century. More than $53,000 in prize money and over $350,000 spent on events during the three years it was held made the competition the richest and most lucrative art competition held up to that time in the United States. Its influence continued to be felt decades later, as many of the nationally-known artists chose to stay in Texas. Those transplant artists, as well as the legacy of the competition, were a pivotal turning point in the art history of Texas.
This magnificent bluebonnet painting, with rich impasto and vivid color, was Clara Pancoast's entry into the Texas Wildflower Competition. It speaks highly of this painting that it was selected to be included in the exhibition over hundreds of other entries from nationally-prominent artists.
The painting shows the influence of Pancoast's teacher, José Arpa, known for his brilliant color and light-infused compositions. The original hand-carved frame with its simple but elegant design is included with the painting.
