Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is located in Lower Normandy near Cherbourg. Loomis lived in France for 11 years, from 1874 when he enrolled in the Acadamic Julian and trained under Leon Bonnat, until 1885. He exhibited in six French Salons and painted his greatest concentration of works with Normandy subjects from the later years of his French period. The wonderful freshness with which he handled oil in this beach scene betrays the mark of his particular penchant forand skill with watercolor..

Condition Report*: Paint film in very good stable condition. Under UV examination there are little, very minor flecks of inpainting in the upper sky, along the left edge (probably infill for frame abrasion), and a 1/2-inch square spot on the ten beach. Otherwise no restoration of any kind is visible.
