CHARLES COURTNEY CURRAN (American, 1861-1942)
Fishermen on the Dock, 1895
Oil on panel on panel
5 x 8-1/2 inches (12.7 x 21.6 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: CHAS. C. CURRAN 95

The date, style and the subject of this lovely intimate painting of fisherman on a dock suggest the Charles Courtney Curran painted it along the East River in New York. By 1895 he had established himself as a major figure, genre and landscape painter of sweeping vistas, all rendered in a luminous impressionistic style characterizing this panel, which he had honed in Paris at the Academie Julian under Benjamin Constant, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Henri Lucien Doucet from 1888 to 1891. Upon his return to the United States, he divided his time between New York City and his house and studio in the Cragsmoor region of New York State, where he and his wife established an art colony. Throughout the years Curran taught at the Pratt Institute, New York City, the Cooper Union and the National Academy.
