Charles Caryl Coleman was born in Buffalo, New York, and was briefly under the tutelage of William Holbrook Beard (1824-1900) before seeking instruction under Thomas Couture in Paris in 1856. By 1860, Coleman, along with lifelong friend and fellow painter Elihu Vedder, traveled to Florence where he was introduced to the expatriate lifestyle. Before he could settle in Italy, Coleman returned to the United States to serve in the Union army during the Civil war. He subsequently settled in New York City in 1863 after receiving an honorable discharge from the army. By 1866, Coleman had returned to Italy where he became a full-time resident of the city of Rome and eventually permanently settled on the island of Capri in the 1880s, a place that became a popular subject for Coleman's paintings.
Best known for his studio compositions executed in the late 1870s-1900s, this work, created while the artist was no more than 21 years of age, is a fine example of his early career in painting.
The present work will be included in Adrienne Baxter Bell's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Coleman's work.
