Born in 1876 in Monterey, California, Carlos Vierra studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute under the acclaimed Gottardo Piazzoni. In 1904, due to health concerns, he moved to New Mexico where he became Santa Fe's first resident artist and one of the founding members of the Santa Fe Art Colony. Vierra had a deep love for the architecture of New Mexico and was a tremendous advocate for preserving landmark buildings and the Pueblo Revival Style. In 1909, he was appointed to manage the New Mexico Art Museum building and he had a tremendous influence in the restoration of the Palace of Governors Building. Drawing from his time as an illustrator, The Serenade is a sensory work that beautifully unites Vierra's love for architecture with the sound of music, the smell of flowers and the feelings of romance.
