    BUCK WINN (1905-1979)
    Sheep Shearing, 1934
    Oil on canvas
    32in. x 27in.
    Signed verso

This painting titled Sheep Shearing was submitted to the section of Painting and Sculpture of the Federal Art Project (Works Progress Administration) in Washington, D.C. in 1934, intended as a study for a mural. Railroad Agency shipping labels attached to the back attest to the fact that the painting was shipped to Washington, D.C. and then shipped back to Buck Winn in Dallas.

Never really content to be an easel artist, Buck Winn dedicated himself to mural projects. He is the most accomplished and prolific muralist in Texas Art history. With close to 50 public murals, untold numbers of concept sketches and mural studies, Buck Winn's art was and is widely known, but the recognition of his name is not.

In Dallas alone he was responsible for murals at the State Fair (several), the Driscoll Hotel, the Village Theater in Highland Park, the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, the Medical Arts Building, Hillcrest Mausoleum, Texas Power and Light Building, the Mercantile Bank Building, the Titche Goettinger Building, the Blackstone Hotel, Amon Carter Field, and Texas Christian University.

Buck Winn is also a member of the original "Dallas Nine," a term first coined in 1932 with the exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art titled Nine Young Dallas Artists Under Thirty.

In addition to his artistic talents, Winn was an inventor and architect. A holder of several patents, he was a member of the Academy of Applied Sciences, and the American Institute of Architects. He taught and lectured at Rice, Princeton, Texas A&M, University of Texas, and University of California at Berkeley.

    Provenance: Estate of Buck Winn
