    Bird-form Pendant
    Diquís Delta
    A.D. 700 - 1500
    Gold, Weight 135.45 grams
    Height 4 ½ in. Width 4 3/32 in.

    Bold, lively profile crocodile heads arch at either side above the massively-beaked bird whose spiky crest may indicate that it is a harpy eagle, the largest and most powerful New World raptor. The heavy, broad beak and chin strap around the eye are characteristics of the Jalaca region style. The talon treatment, with its suggestion of front and rear opposition, is unusual. The beaded wings are given a further powerful enhancement by small, profile crocodile heads at their tips. There is a crack in the proper left tail, with the condition otherwise good.

    The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.
