    Bird-form Pendant
    Diquís Delta
    A.D. 700 - 1500
    Gold, Weight 132.01 grams
    Height 4 5/16 in. Width 3 13/16 in.

    This heavy casting portrays a raptorial bird with especially massive beak and talons, the latter arrayed in a menacing row across the body. Supernatural elements include a three-part, clawlike frontal crest and outward facing, open-mouthed profile zoomorphs at either side of the head. The lower edges of the spread wings are each accented by four bosses enclosed by an arced double band. S-shaped curls at ear position and a double chin strap which coils around the eyes complete the image. This chin strap and the massive beak are characteristics of the Jalaca style region of the Diquís Delta. The condition is excellent, with ancient manufacturing fills visible on the flared tail.
