    Description
Bird-form PendantDiquís
A.D. 500 - 1550
Gold, Weight 178.2 grams
Height 6 in. Width 5 ¼ in.
This bird pendant in the form of a harpy eagle has a prominent hooked beak that juts forward over a triangular breast area. Grasping claws are ready imminently to seize prey. Stylized crocodile heads protrude from each side of the bird's head, and simply rendered bird heads are attached at each cheek area. The bead-like eyes are set into rings, and curled projections top the head. Seen from above, the head is covered by integrally cast criss-cross openwork strips. The flattened stylized plaque represents extended wings and bifurcated tail feathers. A suspension loop is on the back neck area. Major casting faults crease and crack the body area, and numerous remaining hammer marks suggest that the planishing was never completed.
Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
