AWARDS:
Best of Show, Men's Arts Council Award, Cowboy Artists of America, 1975 (label verso).
EXHIBITED:
Cowboy Artists of America annual exhibition, 1975.
Bill Owen was born in Arizona to an artist mother and a cowboy father. This legacy would serve to influence the direction of his life. From an early age, Owen exhibited natural talent as an artist and began drawing with encouragement from his mother. As a young man he worked on various ranches, an experience that gave him firsthand knowledge of the cowboy life he would later paint. Owen utilized his insider experience as a ranch hand to accurately depict the disappearing lifestyle of the cowboy. At the age of thirty-one, he was invited by one of the founders of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) to join that prestigious organization. Since becoming a member in 1973, Owen has won a total of thirty-one awards including three Best of Show Awards and four CA Awards. The latter is a highly coveted award that is voted on by the general membership and in essence is recognition from one's peers.
C.O. Bar Cattle Country received the Best of Show award in 1975 and is an exceptional example of Owen's work. Three cowboys are wrangling cattle on a snow-covered plain. Owen has realistically captured the strategic movements of each cowboy as they work together to drive the herd. Through his paintings and sculpture, Owen strives to accurately capture the cowboy life and document it before it completely disappears. His work has been complimented by working cowboys as truly showing what their life is really like.
