Large, figurative drums carved from a single piece of wood were played by society leaders at the initiations, marriages and funerals. This impressive drum supported by a kneeling female caryatid holding a child would have belonged to the "A-Tekan Society" of women who have had children. The circle of heads above the caryatid could be either those of other children or those of ancestors. Large standing drums carved for the women's A-Tekan society or the men's Simo society ceased to be made around 1950 because of Islamic pressure, so the present drum must have been made before that date.
