Condition Report*:
A hairline crack, approximately 4 inches inward from left edge, runs vertically the height of the work, some applied retouching. A 3 inch vertical hairline crack descending from right side of upper edge. A 5 inch vertical hairline crack ascending from right side of lower edge. All cracks appear stable at present, with some applied retouching but no active flaking or lifting. Very minor scuffing in upper left quadrant. Mild surface dust. Finely patterned craquelure throughout. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: very heavily applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly, somewhat obscuring the picture surface. Retouching to aforementioned cracks. Apparent extensive, older retouching to the background, but avoiding the inscription. More recent, finer retouching applied in dots and dashes to the figure's torso and ruff. A small area of retouching to his forehead, with smaller, finer retouching to his mustache, chin, beard, and the lower half of his proper right cheek.
