While the early work of Edward Henry Potthast exhibited the darker tonalities, the artist's palette brightened after his move to New York in 1896 when he embarked upon a series of paintings of sunlit beach scenes in the Impressionist style. As in this vibrant painting of children playing in the water, Potthast applied his pigments with a thickly laden brush and bright hues to convey gaity and warmth.
