Genre and landscape painter Heinrich Bürkel was noted for his meticulously detailed technique which he developed through association with artists in Munich, Schleissheim and the Netherlands. He produced the present work, with its golden light powerfully reminiscent of the work of Dutch 17th-century artists active in Rome, while he was himself living and working in Rome from 1823-1832.
