An Eastern Woodlands Quilled Hide Drawstring Pouch
c. 1756

black-dyed buckskin, natural and dyed porcupine quills, metal cones, dyed deer hair, accompanied by a provenance note stating: 1756, This bag was made for Maj. Ephraim Heald by an Indian squaw as a tobacco pouch about the year 1756. He was the great-great grandfather to you (Alfred W. Allyn). He was a Scout in the service of the King of England in the war that gave Great Britain control of French North America. His son Nathan used it as a silver pouch. It is made of deer skin. The ornaments are made of Procupine (sic) quills, colored by Indian dyes. The pendants were made of hair from the breast tuft of the moose and colored by the Indians and set in their leaden sockets by them. H.B. Doland

Provenance:
Made in about 1756 for Major Ephraim Heald, who was a scout for King George III during the French and Indian War. Through the family by descent.

Length: 7 ½ inches, excluding fringe


Condition Report*: In overall fair to good condition.  Pouch split on both sides of the upper (unquilled) panels; approx. three smaller adjacent tears - one with thread repair.  Supple hide.  Two small areas of a superficial substance (dirt?) on quilled panels.  Some fading of blue quills. Quillwork with only minor loss on the panels, more so on the hide thongs.  Approx. 12 metal cones missing.  Only remnants of red-dyed horsehair remaining in the metal cones.  No apparent restoration.
