THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST
Alexander Van Laer was a noted landscapist active both in his native New York and in Connecticut. He spent his formative years studying painting under artist R. Swain Gifford and traveled to Holland to study with his cousin, the artist George Poggenbeck (1853-1903). His stay in Holland had a profound affect on his artistic style, which frequently centered on somber tones and rural scenes characteristic of the Barbizon and Hague School painters. Nonetheless, on occasion, Van Laer produced paintings such as the present work, which come quite close to embracing Impressionism in its brighter colors, smaller brushstrokes, and emphasis on shimmering lighting effects.
