Aldro Thompson Hibbard was celebrated for his snowy winter landscapes, particularly of Vermont. This prime example of his work in that genre depicts Belmont Hill, in his home state of Massachusetts. Hibbard, who spent most of his life in Rockport, Massachusetts was a true plein air painter who had trained at the Boston Museum School of Art under Frank Benson, Frederick Bosley and Edmund Tarbell before winning a scholarship for further study in Europe upon graduation. It is said that he discovered his talent for snow scenes when caught in a blizzard in the mountains near Madrid.
