Description

ALBERTO VARGAS (American, 1896-1982)
Playboy cover, March 1965
Gouache, watercolor, and pencil on board
29.5 x 19.5 in.
Signed lower right

This is one of only around half dozen painted covers done for Playboy magazine and is one of the most well known images that Vargas produced for the magazine. The young lady has promised her mother not to appear naked on the cover but said nothing about appearing nude within! Hugh Hefner apparently spent a good of time making sure that the image was just right, as it went through a number of revisions prior to publication. Such an immediately recognizable cover image represents the peak of Vargas' work for Playboy. The original painting was acquired directly from Playboy.

This lot is accompanied by an original issue of the Playboy magazine, March 1965.

From the Collection of Craig Macmillan.
