ALBERTO VARGAS (American, 1896-1982)
Just Add Mistletoe, Playboy Vargas Girl pin-up illustration, March 1971
Watercolor on illustration board
18 x 27 in.
Signed lower right
This sizzling centerfold hails from a peak period, the swinging seventies.

"So that's what right on means."

Great American Pin-Up author Charles G. Martignette noted, "From the time America was introduced to the Varga Girl in 1940, the name Vargas has been synonymous with pin-up and glamour art. In fact, the word 'vargas' has actually been applied to almost every kind of pin-up subject -- a fitting tribute to the most famous and prolific glamour artist of all time."

In 1957, Playboy magazine published a pictorial feature on Vargas' nudes, and publisher Hugh Hefner soon extended an invitation to showcase Vargas' work monthly in Playboy.

Embarking on this landmark association in 1960, Vargas ultimately painted 152 works for Playboy. In addition to his famous centerfolds, Vargas created two front cover images for Playboy during his long reign as the magazine's most celebrated artist.
