Description

ALBERTO VARGAS (American, 1896-1982)
Gold Carnation (Legacy Nude #9), 1940s
Watercolor and gouache on board
21.5 x 29.5 in.
Signed lower right

This painting is the ninth in the series of twelve Legacy Nudes that Vargas painted for his wife Anna Mae at a low point in their lives after being fired by Esquire and before he began his long association with Playboy. Vargas is reported to have considered this series his best work, and as immediately obvious from the stunning quality of the body of work, he put his heart and soul into every image. This painting was reproduced as the back cover of Reid Austin's seminal book Vargas (published in September 2006 just before the author's death) and is one of the most well known of the Legacy Nudes. The art was acquired directly from the Vargas family.

From the Collection of Craig Macmillan.
