Description
A SIOUX QUILLED AND BEADED HIDE POUCHc. 1890
decorated on the front with a central U-ma-ne symbol against a striped ground in dyed porcupine quills, the reverse with red stripes against a hide ground, beadwork and short hide fringe around the perimeter
Length: 14 ΒΌ inches
The U-ma-ne symbol is frequently seen in Sioux beadwork and quillwork, representing the unappropriated life or power of the earth which man may obtain. The square or oblong with four radiating lines is interpreted to represent the earth and the four directions.
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. Hide with usual wear, including light to moderate soiling. The back of the pouch has an approx. 3/8" tear. The quillwork horizontal striping on both sides of bag has some losses and abrasions. Some yellow porcupine quillwork loss and some damage to red quills in U-ma-ne symbol. Loss of green silk ribbon. Small holes around ribbon remnants in front. Beading along perimeter of bag with no losses, but one section (near the hole in the back) is displaced. Some loss of quilled fringing. Inside bag on backside "28 /14" written in blue ink. No apparent restoration.
