Description
A SIOUX BEADED HIDE RATTLEc. 1890
composed of a cylindrical aluminum can wrapped with hide and decorated with sinew sewn and lane-stitched beadwork in various shades of glass seed beads, mounted on a tapering wood handle with coiled beadwork, a triangular tab pendant suspended from the base, trimmed with hide fringe and basket beads
Length: 43 inches overall
Condition Report*:
In overall good to very good condition. Wood with nice patina; tip has small (ink?) spot of approx. 1/8." Some red chicken feathers present. Silk green ribbons with loss and fraying. Gold silk ribbon with tears and fraying. Fringe with usual wear, including moderate soiling. Coiled beadwork around wood extant, as well as beadwork covering aluminum can. Approx. 5-5/8" section and approx. 2" section of small blue bead loss around one side of tab pendant; other blue bead loss around tab pendant. Red calico fabric pendant liner in good condition, with exception of one approx. 1/2" x 1/2" hole near top. No apparent restoration.
