Mr. H. K Field, Esqr
Mills Building, San Francisco, Cal.

My Dear Sir,

You asked me to give you a little history of the Indian baskets which you recently bought here in Yosemite.

The large one was made by an Indian woman named Mary Ann. She was the daughter of the last wife of Old Bullock who used to live at Wawona (Indian name of place was Pallahchun). Bullock used to hunt deer and catch fish for me when I lived at that place, and followed the same business for the Warwona Hotel until he was killed when on one of his fishing trips. Mary Ann and her mother then used to catch fish for the hotel until the soldiers were stationed near there, when they were obliged to leave for self protection. May Ann died at Cold Springs (Conways) two years ago. She was one of the best and most artistic basket makers of the Indian women.

The small basket was made by a Piute (sic) woman from Mono Lake, the wife of Bridgeport Tom who spend the summers here in Yosemite.

Yours sincerely,

Galen Clark

Diameter: 15 ¾ inches
