A MANDAN/HIDATSA QUILLED HIDE TOBACCO BAGc. 1890
each side decorated with geometric motifs in natural and dyed porcupine quillwork, one side with horse tracks on the upper panel, fine leather slats, wrapped with porcupine quills suspended below, hide fringe along the bottom
Length: 33 ½ inches overall
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. Hide with moderate wear, including moderate soiling. There is an approx. 5/8" slit near top of bag, and two pinholes near side seam, and another pinhole near center of bag on one side. There is a blue-colored outline of approx. 5" x 1/2" on one side of bag near top. Beadwork extant and clean. Porcupine quilling with fading, abrasion and loss, including a partial horizontal rows of approx. 1-3/4" x 1/2," 1-3/4" x 1/2," 1" x 1/4," 3/4" x 1/2," and 7/8" x 1/2." Predominant loss of horizontal quilling around sides of bag. Loss of quilling on slats, including two approx. 1" sections; loose sections of quilling evident. Fringe extant. No apparent restoration.
