A Lumi Stone-Cut Shield, Papua New Guinea

The Lumi area, also known as the West Sepik Province, is located in Papua New Guinea. An especially important aspect of New Guinea art is the relationship between art and war. Both masks and shields used in warfare were decorated elaborately and colorfully. Decorating a shield with symbols imbued it with a supernatural power, providing the warrior protection with the help of ancestors and the spirit of the clan. This shield is stone/shell cut and not carved with metal tools.
