Description
A Life-size Teotihuacan Stone Mask in Dense Stonec. 450 - 650 AD
This life-size stone carving shows a refined symmetrical and well-modeled face. The image depicts an idealized beauty in the culture, with such large carvings thought to have been attached to perishable material totems and mannequins positioned at entryways to the great city of Teotihuacan and at temples.
In a stone of a deep dark greenish/beige, the face includes a forehead that is is smoothly angled above wide arching brows, almond recessed eyes that would have held inlays, lightly contoured cheeks, parted lips, and rectangular flared ears. On the rear, the carving has a large ground recess and is bi-conically drilled for suspension.
