A Kuba Knife

In many areas of Africa, swords, knives, axes and other bladed weapons have become accoutrements of men's personal and family prestige. During public activities, a man held the weapon or displayed it in his waist garment. Although these objects originated from modest, practical models, they have often become elevated, as with this example, to the status of an objet d'art. Thus, this piece is largely ornamental rather than functional.

The incisings on the blade and the handle incorporate pervasive Kuba designs, in large part based on variations of guilloche motifs, found on many objects, from ritual masks, furniture, weapons, ceramics and textiles. This excellent example evidences use, but is in good condition.
