Description

A GREAT LAKES QUILLED HIDE KNIFE SHEATH

c. 1780

composed of black-dyed buckskin, decorated with dyed porcupine quills in four different techniques, trimmed with metal cones

Length: 11 ½ inches

Condition Report*: In overall fair condition to good condition. Buckskin hide with heavy wear, including heavy soiling and loss. Front of sheath has several pinholes, translucent areas, a tear of approx. 1", holes of approx. 3/4" x 1-1/8", approx. 5/8" x 1-1/4." Porcupine quilling loss and fading. Metal cones on top of sheath extant with some loss to rawhide fringe underneath. Four metal cones on bottom of sheath extant with some loss to rawhide fringe underneath. No apparent restoration.
