Marks: JBte Carpeaux 1872, PROPRIETÉ CARPEAUX, P (eagle)
21-3/8 inches high (54.3 cm)

The patinated bronze figure entitled Le Genie de la Danse of a nude male dancing figure emerging from a draped base with upraised arms, holding a tambourine in his right hand, a figure of a cupid with bow and quiver holding a torch on the oval base.

The composition upon which this bronze is based is from the central figure of Carpeaux's group of four cavorting nude dancers created for the facade of Charles Garnier's Paris Opera House.
