Cast by H. Rouard, Paris, France, circa 1900
Marks: Falconet, H. ROUARD Fondeur Paris
17-1/4 inches high (43.8 cm)
The gilt bronze figural group entitled Milo of Croton of a partially draped figure male being attacked by a lion, on a stump and rock work base.
Based on the marble group in the collection of the Louvre Museum, Falconet's rendition of the Milo of Croton represents the 6th century BC Greek athlete attempting to test his legendary strength by splitting open a cleft tree trunk with his bare hands. Unfortunately his hands were trapped in the tree trunk and he was devoured by wild animals.
